25th Anniversary of FAME - THE MUSICAL

It's the 25th anniversary of FAME - THE MUSICAL! We're taking a look back at 25 years of FAME and fortune, and celebrating the milestone with a special offer...

The well-known story of a group of New York performing arts students and their journeys from freshmen to seniors started life 25 years ago as the 1980 musical film Fame. Sweeping up numerous awards and nominations at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Academy Awards, the film enjoyed critical acclaim and box-office success. The title song Fame, sung by Irene Cara, became one of the most universally recognizable movie themes; reaching number one in the singles charts of six countries.

So loved were the characters, songs and dance routines of Fame that a television show based on the film was developed and aired from 1982 to 1987. The show’s success matched that of the film, particularly in the UK and Australia, spawning several hit records and live tours by the cast members.

1988 saw the story come to life on stage with the musical opening in Miami, Florida, and being enjoyed by audiences around the world ever since. With various reincarnations continuously sprouting up, including a sequel musical, a spin-off TV show, the 2009 film remake, and countless performances by companies all over the world, FAME has undoubtedly become a classic musical that transcends distance and decades.

FAME’s creator David De Silva is also known as Father Fame, having set up the Father Fame Foundation, which offers performing arts scholarships, and the Fame Network, which interactively promotes the value of performing arts in education and in life.

With three variations of the musical available, it's easy to find the FAME for you:

Set during the last years of New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts on 46th Street (1980-1984), FAME is a bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work. With candour, humour and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today: issues of prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance. A one act version of the original musical designed for younger performers, this Junior show runs for about 60 minutes and addresses age-appropriate themes. FAME JR includes all the great features of our Broadway Junior collection, including a Showkit with all your required resources, an accompaniment CD to perform with, and the hits of the full length version made more manageable for young voices. This full length sequel to FAME – THE MUSICAL revolves around the original musical’s characters, now adults, whose children attend New York’s famed LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Taking audiences on a journey that shows the connectivity, in time, that we have to each other and the world around us by "connecting our past with our future", this multi-generational musical is a great choice for community theatres, with wonderful roles for teens and young adults

To celebrate 25 years of Fame, we are offering 25% off rehearsal hire/Showkit cost and 25% off added resources.*
