A play about, of all things… Australian Rules football!

This play by well-know Australian playwright, Alan Hopgood (author of “Weary”: the story of Sir Edward Dunlop; “The Carer” and “The Golden Legion of Cleaning Women” was premiered at the Russell Street Theatre in 1963 by the Melbourne Theatre Company.  This successful play ran for twelve weeks to capacity and was the first of the ‘footy’ plays, blazing the trail for “The Club” and those that followed.

In print, “And The Big Men Fly” has sold over 200,000 copies and has been studied by several generations of students.  It has stood the test of time, with revivals in Melbourne in 1988 and Adelaide in 1994

And now….the MUSICAL…… Alan Hopgood has teamed up with celebrated Australian composer Kevin Hocking to bring these wonderful characters to life again on stage.

Detailed Synopsis

The East Melbourne football team “The Galahs” has not won a Premiership for thirty years, when a mystery recruit from Manangatang, ACHILLES ('Acky') JONES is signed up. He not only kicks wheatbags around with his bare feet but often carries his old horse, Milly, around on his back. But despite every effort by JJ FORBES, the Galah's President and Coach, nothing will persuade ACKY to leave the peace of his farm, until his girl friend LIL suggests that playing footy would be one way of getting back at the Williams ‘boys from over the hill', who ACKY has been feuding with for years.

ACKY takes the football world by storm and soon kicks the Galahs to their first victory, despite the opposition of football roundsman, WOBBLY COATES, who has wagered heavily with JJ against the Galahs.

ACKY is hailed as the new hero and finds himself crowned  “King of Kicks” on the TV footy show and soon his little farm house is stuffed with give-aways, none of which he wants but LIL keeps him at it, with regular 'lies' about the WILLIAMSES, that sting ACKY into action.

On the eve of the Grand Final,  WOBBLY stirs up the feud with the WILLIAMSES in the hope of ACKY being injured but it is the old horse, Milly, who  is accidentally shot.

LES WILLIAMS surrenders and the upset ACKY learns LES wasn't making up 'those lies every week' and WOBBLY COATES started the fighting.

So what does he do?  If he wins the game, JJ gets away with 'all those lies of his'. If he loses, WOBBLY gets what he wants. Forced to take the field without any sleep for three days, ACKY keeps the scores 'sorta level', kicking a goal and then sitting on the ground thinking about it. Finally, with seconds to go, he kicks the ball at WOBBLY in the Commentary box, sending him to hospital. The game ends in a draw and he retires to the farm leaving the Grand Final to be replayed the following week without him.
